I had never been on a cruise before…it just wasn’t the kind of vacation that I thought i would enjoy and definitely not the kind of vacation that I’d ever be able to afford. But las spring while thinking about the fact that this summer would not only be my 30th birthday, but also the long anticipated North American Solar Eclipse I thought to myself…”If I miss getting a good view of the eclipse that coincides with my birthday I’m going to be so upset.” So, I started searching…first we thought we’d go down south to catch the eclipse along it’s path so we’d see the TOTAL eclipse, but we calculated the costs of flights and hotels, and then we thought about making it a road trip…but no matter how we sliced it, it was expensive.
Finally I thought “screw that! If we’re going to see this thing and heading south is going to result in a $2,000+ trip I might as well look to see if there are any cruises happening around that time! And that’s when I found it…Royal Caribbean was advertising a Total Solar Eclipse Cruise! We crunched the numbers and decided that the cruise would be our best shot at seeing the eclipse! Which it turns out was a good choice because we heard that in South Carolina where we had initially wanted to go to see the eclipse actually had cloudy weather that day so there wasn’t a good view of it!
I’m so happy and grateful that I got to celebrate my 30th birthday with Marco on the Total Eclipse Cruise!
Sitting in Central Park, Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas
Exploring the decks…our room wasn’t ready yet so…might as well explore!
So many pina coladas…we got a drink package so I enjoyed a week of as many of these bad boys as I wanted!
Nerd alert…I got a book on Amazon before the trip all about Solar Eclipses, specifically this one!
It’s a good thing we went on the cruise instead of driving down to South Carolina…apparently the coast was cloudy and people there didn’t have a clear view!
Cruise food is amazing! I had no idea, people have told me but I didn’t know just how good it could be!
Every night was date night!
VSAUCE was here! Well Kevin from VSauce. It was great he delivered a lecture on the boat about the eclipse!…We even got a pic with him, but that was on Marco’s phone :(
My Birthday! We wandered around the top deck most of the day to get a good view of the concert! Total Eclipse of the heart was epic! The Jonas guy…meh he was ok. :P
Showtime! This was the best view we could get! XD
View of the stage!
Waiting for that Eclipse! We were so ready!
We camped out on the top deck just waiting for that moment!
Finally! The eclipse was amazing! It got really DARK! So dark that the automated night time lighting kicked on!
It was so hard to get a good pic of the eclipse! It only lasted a couple of minutes. I had read online earlier that day that because you’re probably not going to be able to take a great pic with your iPhone that you should instead just focus on taking pics of you and your family/friends experiencing the eclipse!
Birthday night dinner! Marco arranged a special surprise at the restaurant, he was so anxious because he wanted to make sure the staff timed it just right!
Our wedding song and this cake! He made it happen :)
Every night was pure magic
The Rising Tide bar! It was an elevator bar that went up and down between levels!
