House of the Sun: Haleakalā, Maui

The Hawaiians named the giant shield volcano that makes up the Eastern portion of the island Maui Haleakalā which translates to “house of the sun.” During my trip to the island we ventured up to the peak by car enjoying the spectacular vistas afforded by the altitude and landscape. It was cold at the top, and the setting was barren, but the red colour and unique plant life makes Haleakalā one of those places you don’t easily forget. If you’re going to Maui this is a must. Dress warmly, and be prepared to hike, you won’t regret it.
